Tony Hendra wrote something recently which summarizes the whole point of the Christ myth. It shows its logic beyond all of the dogma "The Man" himself is reported to've said would distort and dominate his message.
Revenge vs. Forgiveness
From a purely scientific point of view, I believe that mercy has repeatedly been proved more effective than vengeance as a means to it's desired end. Then again, to be sure, one'd have to know just what in either case the desired end is. This distrust is where today's faith truly lies.
